Green Roofs

GreenKrete System 5 or System 6 is a four or five layer Krete System used for Green Roofing systems. - The characteristics of GreenKrete are ideal for all green roofing systems whether you require ‘extensive’ or ‘intensive’.

Green roofs comprise two primary elements:

  • Waterproofing layer which separates the greenery / roots and associated water from the structure (GreenKrete)
  • Planting layers (extensive or intensive) as design requirements

A good green roof is a blend of construction skill and horticultural know how, it’s rare for anyone to be an expert in both areas. Krete Systems has partnered with one the UK’s leading Horticultural and Plant Science companies with over 40 years experience to provide an exemplar design, install and maintenance service.

GreenKrete can be used as a root barrier without the need for other protection systems being added, a major weakness in most greenroof systems is the potential for damaging the waterproofing membrane through normal use or periods of maintenance.

GreenKrete - Green Roof Systems

GreenKrete can be shaped and moulded to provide structured layering to allow for a mixture of deep and shallow sections all in one seamless layer to guarantee strength and waterproofness for the life of the building. No other waterproofing system can provide this level of security allowing the skills of the plant scientists to be maximised without being compromised by the waterproofing layer.

What is a Green Roof?

Broadly speaking, a green roof is one with plants growing on its surface. This could range from a spontaneously occurring moss and lichen covered roof to a full scale roof garden that includes trees, shrubs and hard landscaping features. The practice of roof planting, has been broken down into two distinct categories:

Intensive

1. - Intensive Green Roofs are roof gardens which as the name suggests are gardens just like any other but is on the roof, they require intensive management and maintenance just like ordinary gardens. - They are usually based upon a thick soil or substrate layer and require additional artificial irrigation making the overall system both heavy and maintenance intensive. This is where the GreenKrete System really excels as it is durable, waterproof and maintenance free permitting garden management to be undertaken without the fear of damaging the waterproofing layer with gardening tools. In addition, the extraordinary strength of the GreenKrete saves on cost as additional root barriers are not required.

Extensive

2. - Extensive Green Roofs are not usually used for recreational purposes unlike the Intensive Systems listed above. - They have low management requirements with plants being selected to succeed with minimal modification of the normal roofing conditions. These lightweight systems create visual appeal, reduce the environmental impact of the building, create habitats for native flora and fauna and enhance building performance.
